Every year, we look forward to rafting the Colorado River through Glenwood Canyon. Known as the Shoshone Rapids or simply Shoshone, this stretch of river provides a double punch with outstanding whitewater and a jaw-dropping setting.
Shoshone is an easy, 45 minute drive from the Vail and Beaver Creek area. And it’s right next door to our Colorado River Outpost at Dotsero.
We offer both a morning and an afternoon option and this is a great trip for families. The minimum age on this trip is 7 years old, depending on the water levels. However, we can easily accommodate families with kids under 7. We will provide a shuttle for those kids ages 5 and 6 around the first set of rapids. From there, they can join the group for the rest of the adventure.
The Shoshone stretch of the Colorado River flows through Glenwood Canyon. The towering red rock cliffs are studded with pine trees, soaring up to 2,000 vertical feet above the river. What’s better, the rapids or the scenery? We’ll leave that up to you.
Rafting here begins as early as May, but most of our trips down the Shoshone Rapids take place from July all the way through September. If you have questions about specifics or our upcoming availability, please feel free to contact us. You can also visit our rafting page to learn more.
While rafting trips need no explanation and horseback riding is always a popular mountain activity, we often receive questions about our side-by-side ATV tours. What makes these trips so special? Why explore the Vail area in a side-by-side?
It’s a valid question. While many regular Vail and Beaver Creek vacationers can lay claim to at least one previous horseback ride or rafting trip, we get a lot of first-timers on our ATV trips. But after their first time, we can almost guarantee – it won’t be the last!
What makes these trips so special? First and probably most obviously, it’s the wind on your face and the fast-paced, driver’s seat view of Colorado’s spectacular mountain country. On our side-by-side ATV tours, you are the driver of your own adventure.
Next, we are fortunate to operate on a 6,000-acre private mountain base area. To put it in perspective, that’s larger than Vail ski area. Plus, we enjoy exploring an additional 14,000 acres of adjoining public land. We have a ton of country to explore, and it’s only accessible to Sage guests.
In addition to the exclusivity, what’s the biggest benefit of having access to this historic private mountain? We’re driving on trails that are specifically designed for side-by-side ATV adventures. These aren’t your average Forest Service roads. On private land, we custom design our ATV trails to be extremely entertaining. And that’s exactly what they are!
Finally, the Sage experience is special because we run new, top of the line machines. Our Maverick’s offer outstanding handling and performance that makes the entire experience that much more fun!

The spring season has officially begun here in the Vail Valley! We are now running guided fly fishing trips on the Eagle River and Colorado River. Spring conditions are fantastic and it has been an awesome start to the season in Colorado!
Reserve Your Guided Fishing Spot
We have openings through this month on the Eagle and Colorado rivers. Reservations are now open for the rest of the summer on these waters, as well as the Piney River – an epic stretch of private water along one of Colorado’s most spectacular wilderness river canyons. Guides are limited, so please give us a call now to reserve your spot this season – 970-476-3700. Or check out our fishing page to learn more.
What to Expect During Early Season Fishing
Early season fishing on the Colorado River and Eagle River brings excellent water conditions and some memorable dry fly hatches – most notably, blue-winged olives. As we get later in the spring, we will begin to see caddis hatches along both rivers. With runoff in late May and June, we will see higher water flows, as well as hatches of big salmonflies. When runoff subsides, dry fly fishing remains consistent through the warmer months – including hopper fishing. Nymphing and streamer tactics are also effective throughout the season.
