Snow Conditions and Snowmobile Trail Update

Vail Area Snow Conditions

Early season Snow conditions in the Vail Valley have been incredible. The 2018/2019-winter season is shaping up to be the best we’ve seen in years.

Snowmobile Conditions

Ski areas have received record amounts of early season snowfall, and snowmobiling conditions on our ranch are outstanding. Currently, snowpack in the Colorado River basin is over 130% of normal. And it’s more than 200% above this time last year!

This is the year to experience a backcountry snowmobile adventure in Colorado. Our 6,000-acre private ranch nestled close to Vail and Beaver Creek has over 100 miles of custom-designed snowmobile trails. It’s an area larger than Vail ski area, and we have three grooming machines to keep trails in great shape.

With all the snow we’ve had so far this season, our grommers have been busy, and trails are in excellent condition. The ranch here is looking beautiful. Guests are enjoying rides through beautiful snow-covered aspen groves and stands of old-growth timber. The wide-open meadows are perfect for testing the throttle on our lineup of new SkiDoo snowmobiles. And views from the ranch overlooking the Vail Valley and the Eagle River Canyon don’t get any more spectacular.

Our fleet of Snowmobiles from SkiDoo features new 4-stroke technology. These machines are very quiet and incredibly fuel-efficient. We like to brag about providing a much smaller carbon footprint than skiing. An experience here is a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of the ski slopes. There may be no better way to experience the peacefulness of the mountains in winter.

This historic private ranch is only open to guests of Sage Outdoor Adventures. There’s never any crowding here. Escape the lift lines and come spend a day in the Colorado backcountry on an unforgettable snowmobile experience!

Technology and the Modern Snowmobile Experience

These aren’t your father’s snowmobiles. When arriving for a snowmobile tour, many of our guests are surprised at the change in snowmobiles since they last rode as a kid. Machines used to be noisy, and emit a strong smell of gas exhaust. But the modern snowmobile experience is something completely different.

You might be surprised to learn that snowmobiles have an incredibly small carbon footprint, particularly compared to the amount of energy required to operate ski lifts. On an average snowmobile tour, your sled will use less than a gallon of gas. In the modern era of sled technology, snowmobile tours are an environmentally responsible and memorable way to experience the beautiful Colorado backcountry.

Here at Sage Outdoor Adventures, our guests get the very best in snowmobile technology. We are proud to have a lineup of 90 Ski-Doo Grand Touring Sport sleds. These snowmobiles feature 4 stroke engines, which are incredibly quiet, clean and very fuel-efficient. They are lightweight, comfortable and fun to ride!

You can always count on Sage to have the best possible machines available. That’s because we are a Ski-Doo direct dealer, getting sleds direct from the factory and having factory-trained mechanics. Our snowmobiles are on a two-year rotation, guaranteeing our guests the newest and best technology available.

When you embark on that snowmobile tour, you can expect an outstanding Colorado mountain experience. Many of our guests have the opportunity to see wildlife that winters on the ranch. You’ll enjoy catching speed through some of our freshly groomed meadows, and winding peacefully through stands of aspen and spruce trees. And you’ll have to catch your breath as you see the incredible views over the Eagle River Canyon and the whole Vail Valley.

Snowmobile technology has certainly changed dramatically over the past 15 years. If you haven’t experienced it, it’s time to hop on and take a ride! Be sure to check out our Snowmobiling Page.

New Guided Fly Fishing Expeditions on The Famed Piney River

Here at Sage Outdoor Adventures, we are extremely proud to announce that we now have access to the famed Piney River near Vail for guided fly fishing trips!

Sage is opening up new private water for the first time ever. We are now the sole fly fishing outfitter on the Piney Valley Ranch. Sage Outdoor Adventures now leases the exclusive fishing rights to this pristine stretch of private water and will begin offering guided fishing trips this summer!

The Piney River is a classic, Colorado backcountry gem. With its headwaters at Piney Lake at the foot of the rugged Gore Range, this freestone river tumbles through a roadless wilderness canyon for 25 miles until its confluence with the Colorado River.

As the Piney River approaches its confluence with the Colorado, it flows right through the heart of Piney Valley Ranch, a sprawling, 30,000-acre mountain paradise. Our guests will have exclusive private access to a stretch of water has never been available to the public.

The team at Sage Outdoor Adventures was able to secure this premier fishing lease thanks to a longstanding relationship with the owners of Piney Valley Ranch, who previously owned Castle Peak Ranch. Castle Peak is where we offer ATV tours, snowmobiling, horseback riding and sporting clays. There were several reputable fly fishing businesses knocking on the door for the Piney River lease. But after seven years of working together at Castle Peak, and knowing first-hand the quality of Sage operations, the owners chose to sign with Sage.

Starting this summer, we will offer full-day trips to this remote, private stretch of the Piney River. Trips will include side-by-side ATVs to navigate the ranch, high-end fly fishing gear, and a gourmet lunch. Like all of our adventures, transportation to and from Vail and Beaver creek is also included.

The ranch will be limited to very few fishing guests each day to maintain a high quality experience. As with everything we do, we place a high priority on the quality of the fishing, the undisturbed wilderness experience, and the quality of guest service.

In addition to the incredible Piney River fishery, Sage guests will have access to two private lakes on the Piney Valley Ranch. These lakes offer the perfect location for a day of fishing, canoeing, hiking and experiencing the scenic Colorado backcountry with family or friends. Just minutes from the Vail Valley, these mountain lake getaways are also well suited to corporate events and other groups.

The exclusive fishing lease on the Piney Valley Ranch also includes a premier section of private water on the Eagle River. This will allow us to offer premium half-day trips just a few minutes from Vail and Beaver Creek.

In addition to these new private waters, Sage Outdoor Adventures will continue to offer guided float trips on the Eagle and Colorado Rivers.

Epic Colorado Combo Trips: Snowmobile and ATV Adventures

ATV and Snowmobile Combo Trip

What’s better than one kind of adventure? Two, of course! We’re now offering some awesome Colorado combo adventures. It’s a unique opportunity for combination side-by-side ATV and Snowmobile trips.

It continues to be a bizarre winter in the Vail Valley, with unseasonably warm temperatures and low snowpack. But that doesn’t mean we’re not having fun around here! In fact, we’re having an absolute blast here at Sage.

For our visitors in the Vail Valley and Beaver Creek areas, there’s no shortage of awesome things to do. We are still offering beautiful winter horseback rides. And we’ve now added something even more unique.

For a very limited time, we are offering side-by-side ATV and snowmobile trips! These adventures allow guests to explore this 6,000-acre private ranch with more than 100 miles of custom trails. That’s an area larger than Vail ski area.

These trips take guests through big open meadows, old growth timber, stunning aspen groves, and jaw-dropping views over the 2,400-foot deep Eagle River Canyon. From up here we’ve got views of seven different mountain ranges. It’s simply a spectacular experience.

Trips start at our base of operations, just a short ride from Vail or Beaver Creek, where we offer free hotel pickup. From the base, guests get to drive our high-end, side-by-side Maverick UTVs up the mountain and through one of the most historic ranches in the valley.

When the snow starts getting deep, guests then hop onto one of our new Ski-Doo snowmobiles and continue the tour through this magical winter wonderland.

Our side-by-side UTV tours are regularly a higher cost than the snowmobile trips. But because we have to improvise this winter, we’re allowing guests to drive these $20,000 machines for the same price as a regular snowmobile tour!

Wildlife near Beaver Creek

Not only is the ranch beautiful right now, but also it’s loaded with wildlife. Our guests are seeing deer and coyotes daily, including some rare predator/prey interactions. Because of the low snowpack this season, the deer herds have not needed to migrate further down the Vail valley floor. They’ve stayed here on the ranch, and that’s keeping coyotes and other wildlife around too. In fact, some of our guests have been lucky enough to see mountain lion tracks.

These wildlife interactions have been a daily treat for our guests. While the weather certainly hasn’t been what we expected this season, it has been a memorable one. If you’re visiting the Vail or Beaver Creek area this winter, be sure to give us a call and join us on one of these Colorado backcountry adventures!

Horseback Rides Are Back – The Midwinter Mountain Experience

The warm weather and the lack of snow around the Vail Valley isn’t getting us down. In fact, we’ve decided to offer some incredible, winter horseback rides!

Normally a summer activity here at Sage Outdoor Adventures, we are bringing back our horseback rides for some awesome midwinter mountain adventures. We’ve been getting daily requests for winter horseback rides, so we have decided to do it.

Like our summer horseback rides, these trips will be on our beautiful trail system along streams, lakes, sage flats, through snow-covered aspen groves and stands of old-growth timber.

If you enjoy horseback riding in the summer, you will be enthralled with a winter exploration of the Colorado backcountry on horseback. With snow on the ground, the cottonwood creek bottoms and aspen groves are stunning. The low snow level has allowed wildlife like elk, deer and coyotes to remain on the ranch in abundance where they are highly visible to our guests.

Guests should dress warmly in their ski clothing, just like you would be going skiing for the day. We will offer small, intimate groups of six horses or fewer. The rides are 1.5 hours long and we provide transportation to and from Vail and Beaver creek, included in the cost of the trip.

If you love mountains and you love horses, this trip is for you!

To reserve your midwinter mountain horseback ride please call us at 970-476-3700 or send us a message. See you on the mountain soon!
