Colorado Snowpack Update from the Vail Valley

Snowpack here in the Vail Valley and along the Colorado River watershed has been excellent so far this season! After a dry winter last year, we are happy to experience great early season conditions into the New Year.

Current Snowmobiling Conditions

Snowmobile guests are having a blast here at our Mountain Base. Snowpack in the Colorado River basin is currently over 100% of normal, and better than 150% compared to last year. We’ve enjoyed great snowmobile conditions so far this season, and storms keep bringing new snow.

Vail Snowpack Update

Our Custom-Designed Snow Trails

Our mountain base of operations is home to 2,500 feet of vertical. We have more than 100 miles of trails on a mountain larger than Vail ski area. These trails were custom-designed by the team at Sage, specifically for our guests. And with the best grooming equipment in the business, trails are always in prime condition.

Our snowmobile trails wind through a variety of expansive Colorado backcountry habitats. Our guests enjoy sweeping views of the Vail Valley and the Eagle River Canyon. It’s the perfect place to escape from the crowded ski slopes on a real mountain adventure – especially with snowpack like this!

Sage’s Modern Snowmobiles

With great snow conditions and a fleet of new Ski-Doo snowmobiles, we’re ready for you! By the way, in case you haven’t been on a snowmobile recently, these are not your grandfather’s smelly, noisy machines. New 4-stroke snowmobiles are extremely quiet and fuel-efficient. It is a great way to experience the Colorado backcountry. See our recent blog post about modern snowmobile technology to learn more.

Our Advanced Deep Powder Snowmobile Tours

Winter in Vail, Colorado, brings with it subzero temperatures and chilled winds – but it also means it’s finally time to rev up the snowmobile engines and hit the snow. Vail averages at 108 inches of snowfall per year, making it the perfect area to plow through deep powder and carve up Sage’s private mountain!

Our Snowmobiling Tours

Most of our snowmobile tours are 2-hour beginner and intermediate tours where we teach our guests how to ride their machines and get the most out of their experience.

With over 100 miles of custom-designed trails on a private mountain that is larger than Vail’s Ski Mountain, these are the ideal trips for families and anyone that wants to have a passenger on the snowmobile with them. They also make great tours for those looking to see the sights and get a feel for what snowmobiling is like!

However, if you’re ready to take things up a notch, you may want to consider our advanced snowmobile tours.

Deep Powder Snowmobiling

Our advanced tour  uses 120-horsepower Ski-Doo mountain snowmobiles. These sleds are designed specifically for off-trail riding, with powerful engines and agility that allow you to carve up snow like never before!

These are incredible machines and on our advanced tours, we teach our guests how to ride in deep powder, climb steep hills and navigate through trees. This is guaranteed to be the most exciting snowmobile ride you can do!

Just like our beginner and intermediate tours, this is not a “follow the guide and keep up” kind of experience. We operate with very small guide-to-guest ratios. Each tour is personalized, and we take the time to make sure our guests are learning, having fun, and really experiencing the thrill of the Colorado backcountry.

Sage’s Snowmobiling Terrain

In addition to the advanced snowmobiling terrain across our mountain, we have 10 free-ride meadows scattered throughout the 6000-acre ranch. These wide-open spaces allow everyone to get their full-throttle therapy and test the abilities of their machine and themselves! With our high-end grooming equipment, these free-ride areas are groomed on a regular basis.

That’s one of the things that makes snowmobiling here different. Since our 6,000-acre ranch is a private area, there are no other tour operators. You’ll have the place to yourself, with the only other people out in the snow being other Sage guests! That means you’re more likely to enjoy untouched deep powder snow and pristine trails.

Our three snowcats regularly crawl the terrain to keep it in prime condition so that you can enjoy the thrill of the ride. From the ranch, you’ll enjoy views of seven mountain ranges, the continental divide and the 2,400-foot chasm into the Eagle River Canyon. In short, snowmobiling at Sage is bound to be on of the best rides of your life!

Our White Water Raft Racing Team Prepares for National Championships

Sage Raft Race Team Preparing for National Championships

It’s the dead of winter and it might seem like a long time until rafting season here in Colorado, but the Sage raft race team is hard at work, preparing for the Rafting National Championships in May!

The 2017 championship will be held in Oklahoma City from May 18th – May 20th as part of the Oklahoma City Whitewater Festival, an event that will also include canoe and kayaking competitions.

Throughout the winter months, the Sage white water raft racing team trains hard in, surprise, the pool. How does that work, you ask? With a bungee strap anchored to the side of the pool, the team is able to paddle in place, which provides great resistance training.

It may not be the same as barreling down wild rivers, but our team is serious about their training, and we are fired up to compete in the May championships!

No matter the time of year, we’re always working hard to plan our next rafting season here at Sage Outdoor Adventures. We keep an eye on the winter weather to anticipate snowpack and the resulting runoff to give our guests the best experience possible. But no matter what the weather brings, we always look forward to getting out of the pool and having a great time with many of you out on the white water rivers of Colorado!

For more information on white water rafting here in the Vail Valley and surrounding areas, please visit our rafting page. In the meantime, we’ll be enjoying the snowmobiling here in this winter paradise!
